Text Box: A HELPING HAND FROM BUFFAT PHC           Issue 108         February, 2009 Back up generators For the second time in four months, a major storm has knocked out power to a large number of homes in the Louisville area.  If you have been without power during either of the outages, you know what a problem this can be.  We are all learning that as bad as things were in September, it is even worse in January, because of the dangers brought on by trying to heat a house with jerry-rigged systems.  Already there have been numerous deaths due to carbon monoxide poisoning. As it warms up, and the frozen pipes thaw, we will find another problem—burst water lines.  The water can do more damage than falling limbs, if the water is running long enough.  Through our electrical company, Plus Electrical, we offer back-up generators.  They run on natural gas and are permanently in place in your back yard, so there is no question about what to hook up.  You decide ahead of time and the connections from the generator to your home electrical system do the rest.  Your investment in a back-up generator can run from $3,000.00 to $7,500.00.   That sounds like a lot of money, but if you have had water damage from frozen pipes because your power went off, or had to throw out a freezer full of meat because it thawed, you begin to see it as a wise investment, especially since it will increase the value of your house when you are ready to sell.  More importantly, there is no temptation to heat your house with the gas grill, or run a portable generator inside so you don’t have to go outside to fill it with gasoline.  Both these scenarios have led to deaths in Louisville in the last week.  A back-up generator can literally be a life-saver.
